If Viz (or anybody else) does'nt have the time to address this, it is a project that coud interest me to work on.
There are pets everywhere on the Steam workshop, we really need a compilation.
Phase 3 of the project seems much more complicated though.
I'm not sure I would have the necessary skills.
- I don't think human companions is a good candidate for the mod, it's too specific
- I thought about Phan's big pets as a starter for the project. It's Phanjam's work so probably very clean and effective, a good base for watch and learn.
What I really want to know is if there is a way to take a pre-existing animation and weight painted set like the Alpaca or Hawk and just add in Blender meshes of custom made critters?I do not think it's possible. In theory, someone with broad knowledge of animation could do something like this, but we do not have such people, we just learn now. In any case, it requires a lot of time.
What I have been doing is I make a proxy skeleton for my "critter" in my blender file, and use drivers and modifiers to animate it from the torchlight skeleton that has the animation I want on it. I typically make a "bone.follow" that copies the transforms exactly, and then make a child bone off of it to act as the IK target. Then I can adjust the position of the target more precisely and it keeps the delta between frames. Then I have the critter skeleton copy the position of the proxy deformation bones. I will end up with a lot more bones on the proxy that you don't want in the final output.And it sounds like a voodoo magic for most people, and for me too. :D

I'm assuming there's still a part of the Star Wars Pet Beta in there. For as far as I know in Mod Star Wars Pet Beta there are using models from Mech Crawler as his pet (just change the look of it).

You're right, I've added start wars pets skins to Mech crawler.
For the next version I'll try to re-encode DDS files for it to see if it fixes your problem.
For creepers it's not even a pet mod and it's a very minimalist model, that's why i didnt' include it.
For other reasons I've decided to not include J-10 pet : lore-breaking, non standard attacks, invicible because it flies.
For the other Galandrix pets I prefer to wait his approval.
For a 1st version there are already tons of pets and I can add new ones later.
Thug Life is more interesting, I will probably include them.

These are some of the problems I've experienced in some Pets, like the Pet is invisible / colorless & sometimes visible / colorful.
I found this on Pet: Kirby, Cube Companion, Eye of the Beholder, Cat Box. Strangely I did not experience this on most other Pets.

I have an idea, after Phase 1 is done when you will make a fish for the pet I think it is better to use the icon of the pet itself as an icon fish. To avoid the same fish icons. Or maybe you have a unique icon for each pet, like the one in Gao Pet mod. Actually it could have been given a different color as a differentiator, but it's already applied in Essential mod, I'm afraid of confusion for the fish.
For the fish itself where will you put it? I mean, are you going to make a special merchant Variant Pet Fish, or you'll put it in general merchant?. If you want to put it in general merchant I suggest to add Tab Fish that is there to sell fish only from Variant Pet Fish.

I don't think it's possible to fix.
The mask is a unit theme and I believe Status Pet menu doesn't handle unit themes.
It seems like almost any Pet that previously could not attack now can attack. But there is still Pet that could not attack, it's Trog Cerebrite.I've just tested Trog Cerebrite, and he can attack. :o

But when he's in an aggressive Mode he does not attack any nearby enemy, he just runs around.

- What kind of information is stored in the mesh file ? Obviously the 3D model, but what else ?
I ask because I may have to use alternative mesh files for the pets I debug to can attack, like you did for the sand colossus.
Because the way I used to do that is to create an Attack1 animation base on another animation.
But I'm afraid it can alter the way the original monsters act in battle.

@Vkoslak for the scorpion are the anims actually embedded in the main .SKELETON as @Korzeam guessed? That makes it hard to give them attack skills or spells. Can they be broken-out?

- When you change your Pet using the Fish, icon Pet does not change.
- Console code for fish Variant Pet still does not exist. It will make it easier to test the Fish. :)
- For the price of Normal Pet (without skill) maybe 1000 gold is enough. What do you think?
- It seems to require a sense of giving status to each pet, because so far we can classify Pet into 2 parts, Slow Pet & Fast Pet. Maybe you can increase attack for slow pets. But you have to be careful, because if it's too strong it will look over power, because most of those who have low attack speed are mostly Giant Pets.
- If you see most slow Pet is a giant size, maybe you can add Def & HP to compensation for being slow. ;)
- I understand what you are worried about, if you give the attack speed too high or the attack is too strong it will affect the damage skill too, then it will be too Over Power for phase 3.
- In phase 3, how many skills will you give to the Pet?
- Does each Pet have a unique ability?
- Will you make the skill for Pet (Phase 3) 0 Mp cost?
- Do not forget to change the name Direwolf on Variant Pet to "Hellhound", because Direwolf existing in Synergies is different from that in Variant Pet. Direwolf existing in the Synergies are generally only Pet wolf that is larger than normal Pet Wolf size.
- What do you mean by you won't be able to choose it with a new character? Is there no more double pet? like what you do for Essential Pet, no pet is double with Variant Pet. If so, it seems pretty good.
- Perhaps the Imaginary Pet Icon can be changed into a monster heros icon rather than left empty like that. I know it's just imagination Pet, but when if it's made empty it seems like there's something missing. :D
You and Phanjam seem to prefer an increased damage, so this is what I'll do.
And yes, maybe I won't double the damage if the attacks have a 2 seconds animation, probably a little less (someting like +75%)
Yeah I mean synergies pets will be disabled at creation screen, but still works if you have already have one.
As the two dire wolves won't cohabit it's not mandatory to change the name.
- As I said before, each pet will start with different stats
- Each pet will start with a 'talent', that would be more an affix than a skill.
Examples : Bleeding bite, Regeneration , knockback attack, knockback resistance, increased critical chance, ...
- Each pet will 'unlock' a skill at levels 30 and 60. These skills would come from a common library.
Examples : Pet growth (+50% size and + 50% damage for x seconds), Frenezy (+50% attack speed for x seconds), elemental attacks, support spells (shield on owner that absorbs damage / owner growth / owner attack speed), healing skill, aggro skill, ...
I have to put in my library at least 30 different skills for diversity.
The way to implement skills that unlock at specific levels could be a stat watcher on skills based on the level.
It works for me.

Find other Pet that has a Bug similar to Pet Swamp Troll & King Troll. Pet Wisp & Nether Wisp also have the same bug. On the Tab Pet Menu looks black.
It's there, but it's not in the Fish section. When I search for it by typing the "Fish" it will show the list of existing fish code. But Pet Variant is not in the Fish section.
But when I type "Item" it will show list of existing items code, and I found Variant Fish code there.

Current issues and limitations:
- Trying to fix the render windows. The Z order makes no sense, so, in the meantime, there is a picture of your pet for you to stare at.
- You can only have 1 of each pet. I know, I know. But, the way it is scripted, each pet on screen has to be unique. There are 14 right now. If I had to allow up to 3 of each, that would be 42 pets. Which is doable, but makes a lot of code unweildly and I'd rather have more custom pets than just 3 Alpacas. I may make an exception for Cat lady. She needs to have like 10 cats around her at all times.
- You have a limit of 4 pets total when trying to summon a purchased pet. You do NOT have this limit on any other summon you make. It does create a problem if you have too many summons out.

No it can't.
To be used as a pet, we need an animation for attacking, and a walk/run animation.
Nice models ;) the giant troll and the tribal wolf are from TL1. The wild wolf, bear and skull dragon all look new to me. Theyr nice so i will check them out.

Like Armadax, all these pets use not one but several model files.
If I add skins the game tries to cover all the model files with the texture, which results to an ugly pet.

And Crash when I tried some Fish from Pet Merchant Variant, I can not confirm the cause because of the uncertainty.
One more thing that I feel when using Variant Pet, after you put Merchant Fist Variant Pet in every town, I feel to be a little slow when in town. Probably because there are too many NPCs in the town.

I found another bug when using Variant Pet with Essential Mod. In Enhance Fish "Enhanced [Fire / Ice / Lightning / Poison] Rock Elemental Essence". When I want to change my pet with Enhance Fish sold in Essential Mod ("Enhanced [Fire / Ice / Lightning / Poison] Rock Elemental Essence"), I can not change my pet. My pet has not changed, still the same.
I think I've fixed this one, same GUID for different pets.
For the warlock problem I have no clue, I've recreated the pet and it's the same.

Hi @KorzeamIn my folder I have a PET_VARKOLYN_WARLOC.DAT.BINDAT but no PET_VARKOLYN_WARLOC.DAT.
I see two Varkolyn Warlock .DAT files in MEDIA\UNITS\MONSTERS\PETS\...
PET_VARKOLYN_WARLOCK
and
PET_VARKOLYN_WARLOC
and they have the same GUID (-4749475966919924218).
This should cause Varkolyn Warlock pet to crash in any case, but it does not explain why the Varkolyn Warlock pet + Synergies Warlock class combination crashes.
Anyway still looking...

- Variant Pets Scrolls : for people who like summons. Adds a scroll for every pet to summon it for X minutes.It's also interesting, adding variety to play.
- Variant Pets Dark Portal : would add a Dark Portal pet. This pet doesn't attack but instead summon random pets from Variant PetsYour idea to give Dark Portal pet the ability to randomly summon pets from Variant Pets is also interesting. I look forward to that. :D

So far i think we can eliminate the Varkolyn pet unit file as the cause of the crashing. I am almost sure it's somthing in the SYnergies mod instead, but i'm still looking.I agree, there is something not compatible between the warlock class and the varkolyn warlock model (not the pet unit itself).
Also, for optimization, best to remove this line...This file is in the Variant Pets mod, as it is in Synergies, TL2 essentiels, XEV pets, ...

It's a file that is used for compatibility with inventory mods like big bag mod or bigger inventories.
So I keep it (and the reference to it).
I have 2 new goblin skins if you want to use them in variant. A light green mage with purple robes, and a darker green winter warrior.

- I'm not a big fan of Pet with a size too big, But there are some Pet that are quite suitable like the Undead Baby Dragon, although it's still a little bit too big for me. ;D
- Pet is too strong, even though I tried with Mod Synergies with Pet Elite level still too strong. :D
- Pay attention to the Pet that flies / floats when you want to choose Pet. Most of the Pet that flies / floats is missing from the screen. Makes you not know Pet's color. :(
- And there were also those who lost their cuteness when they were enlarged in size like the Bat Rabbit. That's what I think. ;)
Can you add more color variations to the Pet that only has 1 color variations, if that can be done, I know you have said there are some pet that skin cannot be added. :PThe answer is still the same : I can't.
Maybe it's just a problem of number.It only takes trial and error to get the right one. ;)

Not sure if it's working but i have uploaded a new version on google drive to adress your requests.It still happened, I did the same by letting my "Guardian Siege Pet & Mana Guardian" pet fight the enemy alone, and when he was attacked / the HP was dying he still screamed in pain. You will be surprised if you play using Headphones. :o
I have also uploaded a new version for the "Big" version, with more reasonable increased stats.It's been much better, especially for pet on that walk on the ground. It seems that for a flying / floating pet it needs a separate treatment so that he doesn't off the screen. ;D

What if you add Creeper to Variant Pet Mod. I know you've said if this creature had no animation to attack other than blasting itself like in Summon Creepers Mod. Because of this I have a suggestion, what if Creeper was made able to attack by calling other Creepers who could explode against the enemy. Maybe you can make Pet Creeper call Mini Creepers and he will blast himself to attack the enemy. So later he will be like a Pet Hobsprite with unique abilities or maybe you can think of it as Black Portal Pet Lite.It's possible but it takes time.
- This pet should avoid enemy contact but it always want to get close to them, even if I use a RANGED AI.Maybe you can look at the Healing Bot, he doesn't attack and isn't attacked by an enemy. He is always near us where we go, and he does healing both on players and pet. Maybe it can be used as a basic idea. ;)
- It should summon minions more often that it does, I don't know exactly what triggers the summoning.
As I can see there is only one spawn animation in these files.This model uses standard wolf animations(MEDIA\MODELS\MONSTERS\WOLF\). I just added spawn animation. For my test-mod this is enough. This is a different kind of wolf, like the shadow wolf.
I need walk, run, idle and attack animations to make a pet.
@Korzeam : Regarding the Dark Portal Pet prototype there is one more that is lacking, which is not able to use spells. More precisely, the pet can learn the spell (for example heal all), but the it doesn't work, and strangely enough MP from Pet actually decreases as if the Heal All skill was executed.Well I don't think I can fix this, if the pet can't attack it can't use spells as well.

To make it easier for your end. Maybe you can simply incorporate specialized fishes, that will grant your pet useful skills instead of inventing/recycling skills for each unique pet, sacrificing look over functionality.I'm a little confused about that.
And how will it be possible to know what are the skills memorized ?I don't think there's a natural way to know what your pet's skills have but you can try adding UI feature in the pet inventory. Or just simply, make those skills/spells have buff icons along with their duration when activated.

Hi @Korzeam, I crashed when using Flamekegger Dwarf Pet. More precisely every time I use a skill to attack enemy I crash. I've tried with all vanilla class and some Mod classes.
Is it possible because he does not have close range attacking animation like punching ? Because I saw him specifically for range attacks and didn't do melee attacks. Maybe if you give the fireball skill as a normal attack for Dwarf pet Flamekegger attacks will solve the problem. ;D
By the way talking about Horse Pet, I have a 3D horse model with animations, I can convert it to FBX format. Can it be put it on Horse Pet? :)

Something I have to say, I have to keep the mod Variant to a reasonable size so I may have to recompress some files.
And for the dragons I'm not going to implement them all, these files are particularly big.
Which can make a pet grow & get skills when it reaches every certain level. That way you don't need to give skills one by one to each Pet in the Pet Variant. ;)
