How do i make icons for my custom items?
« on: »
I'm having alot of trouble getting icons for my new items, is there a method that people commonly use to get them? I've heard you can 'snapshot' or something but I have a hard time getting it to look right once shrunk to the appropriate size.

Anyone have any ideas?

are you familiar with how to actually create custom icons? like how to edit imageset files and what not.
if you are i can give you tips on how to create images with precise measurements for placing in icons

anways..
for a quick rundown.
icons use 3 file extension types in GUTS, they are:
.PNG
.DDS (typically DXT1 but sometimes DXT3 for transparency)
.IMAGESET
icons are displayed in the editor through the .PNG file and displayed in the game with the .DDS file,
while the .IMAGESET file will determine the dimensions and divisions of your image

most of the icons for weapons and items use 512x512px dimensions with 56 subdivisions measuring 62x62px, for some reason the subdivisions are not precisely measured in to fit the 512x512 dimensions and the imageset is set up so that the grid has a gutter of about 3px, this setup is kinda complicated since the measurements are not precise and could throw off your calculations when you line up icons in the image

i would suggest using a set up where you use 64x64px images and line them up into 64 subdivisions giving you an 8x8 grid within the 512x512px image, you'd have to edit the imageset files then calibrate the x and y coordinates within to properly display the icons, but i think it would be worth doing this since you can just clone the same imageset file and replace the names and images to create new icon sets

when im making icons i usually use a 128x128px canvas then resize that into a 64x64px image or just a straight 64x64px canvas, you can grab any image and resize them to fit into the canvas them simply drag them into the main 512x512 image and line them up, since i use photoshop i usually create guidelines inside the .psd file and make a visual grid and line up the images like that..

if you've read that and your utterly confused, post back and if you want, i can give you a template imageset file and a properly set up .psd file with all the grids and whatnot so you can visually understand what im going on about,

anyways good luck with making icons  ;)

I know how to do all of that~  :P

What I'm asking is how to get the icon itself for the your items. Do you open it in a model viewer and snapshot it or something? That's more of what I'm asking. I know how to edit and make the imagesets, however I don't know how to make my icon image itself of my item.

So far i've tried screenshotting and cutting/shrinking, but it makes it look soooo bad.

So what I was asking was, in more detailed terms: How do I get an icon image of my item in the first place so that I can work with it? is there a normal screen capture software that you guys use or a method to snap the picture in the first place? I can build it all up from there I just can't figure out how to get a decent image to work with.

o cool

i dont want to sound like im bragging or anything, but for me i have enough artistic skill to just look at an image and make an icon off the bat..

if i had your predicament though i would take a normal screen shot of the full model, in blender or whatever 3d model viewer you have then crop it out, position it, and properly adjust it to be showcased inside the square dimensions of the icon, after that i would touch it up with photoshop removing the pixelation, defining the edges, adding contrasting shadows and doing lighting adjustments while using the existing weapon icons as a reference, but this still would require some sort of artistic ability

anyways heres an example image with all the steps i took, using one of the screenshots for your gunblade and utilizing the above technique on it, to make an icon for the weapon.

i wouldn't know what to do if i had no art skills, but people who make icons should inherently have the artistic skill anyways, not to sound like and ass and be condescending but im assuming that you do have artistic talent, i did that icon above in around 10 mins and you should be able to do the same as i did by virtue of your models and textures looking awesome  :D

That's a fine looking icon there @TwinkleToes !

@Haxley I'd agree with Twinkle - take a screenshot of your model in some viewer and adjust from there ;)
