Lesser Dragons
« on: »
A couple weeks ago, I suggested that DeeZire might use a scaled-down and rebalanced version of the dragon boss as a normal monster fire his fire dungeon. The idea being to keep things fresh with a monster that's troll-grade difficulty, or maybe somewhat harder. Then I decided it might be fun to make the monster myself. Then the project kind of experienced some mission creep... The end result is the Lesser Dragons mod.

Lesser Dragons includes four elemental-themed dragons intended for use as normal monsters that are somewhat more challenging than trolls and other large, dangerous monsters present in the vanilla game.

The dragons are:
Lesser Fire Dragon      (console name: lesser_dragon_fire)
Lesser Frost Dragon   (console name: lesser_dragon_ice)
Lesser Swamp Dragon   (console name: lesser_dragon_poison)
Lesser Storm Dragon   (console name: lesser_dragon_lightning)

These dragons have NOT been added to any spawnclasses.
If you want to test them out, you'll need to summon them via their console names.
You'll need to add them to the appropriate spawnclasses if you want them to spawn in the wild.

Special thanks to TwinkleToes for permission to borrow the concept and particle from a clever Plaguelord skill for use in a swamp dragon skill.

Anyone may use these dragons in their own mods so long as they (i) give me credit for the dragons, (ii) give TwinkleToes credit for that one cool skill, and (iii) retain the readme file in the root of the media directory.

For the time being, this is the only link to this file, so it's a TorchModder's exclusive. At some point I may get around to creating a page for it on clockworkcore and cross-posting on the Runic forums. Also, if there's interest, I might post later about the balance/design considerations behind these guys.

[UPDATE 9/1/2015: Updated to use TwinkleToes' awesome thundernado. Same download link as before.]

It's amazing. Excellent work!  ???
And ... these dragons look like in my dream - bosses for 4 element towers of the Dark Palace.  ::)

Ok, I tested the Dragon, and they are really cool... the only one I feel was a bit tought, more like a champion than a normal monster was the lightning Dragon, the thunder locus, the homing missiles that make a thunder fall and the tornados where a lot to avoid when it cast it one after another and then goes flying  ::)
The other were really cool for a Troll grade monster. And I loved the hit particles and texture, the skill where great too.
I was like woah look at that  ???, and that is cool  :o, and now I have all this thing that want to kill me  :'(

Out of curiosity, what kind of character build were you testing it with?

ooh I was testing a sword and board destro, with Slash attack, Stampede and Titan stomp as damage skills and Shadow armor as defense, but well I was just level 14 before defeating Grell.
For me the issue was the Thunder locus, it cast it right next to himself and can't be killed, so I couldn't get in melee range, and then he started casting everything else, The lightning breath, the homing lightning bombs and the tornados, I don't know if those do too much damage but the Mirka teach me to avoid tornados so I have to run around dodging like crazy and waiting for the thunder locus to dissapear an then for the dragon to stop flying.
Not too hard, but certainly in the level of a Champion like the Elementals.

That's odd, since I was testing the lightning guy with a thrown-together level 50 ravager and I had to keep making him harder to keep up with the others. He's supposed to be worse for casters than melee...

You hit the nail on the head with his design intent: His damage is supposed to be hard to avoid. That's his major theme. So you either need to be tough enough to tank it, or cede the location he casts the thunder locus, dodge his projectiles, and wait for him to move somewhere else where it's safe to hit him. The lightning guy is kinda of the opposite of the poison guy in that the poison guy is a "DPS check" while the lightning guy is an "armor check."

FYI, the tornadoes are actually the least damaging thing he can throw at you.

woo, i checked them out, the poison dragons slime bomb attack indeed looks awesome :D
but i did notice, that the frost and lightning dragons throw out the same tornadoes when they do their wing beat attack

Anarch, the Destro might be a tad underpowered for now.  Or at least harder to play than other classes.  Same thing, ya?

Yeah, It may be that tough. But I really like the design choices of the Dragons, since the intention is to be like that  :D

I'm gonna give them a go again sometime later with other character. I just was curious to see the dragons.  :D

If you look closely, the lightning dragon's tornadoes have a sparkly core, while the ice dragon's are frosty. It's kind of obscured by the cyclone particles though. Maybe I should change the color on those?

i made you a lightning tornado particle, i quicky put this together while thinking of particles for the destro :D
im assuming you used the mirka tornadoes for the base particles, so i made this one using that as the base

if you want to use it
i attached the .dat file below

also heres a gif pv
