Willing to improve "General Passives" mod a bit for own use (atleast) and was wondering if the followings are even possible. I'm noob modder with big dreams.
So, I am planning to change base game like:
- Remove standard spells and replace with custom ones with better visual effects, increased cooldown and power.
- Move standard passive spells to General Passives.
- Lower player's spells from 4 to 1 and pet's from 4 to 0.
- Remove Skill points from Fame levels and change them into Fame Points.
- Fame points can only be spent on General Passives.
- Lower classes max passive ranks to 10 from 15 without losing powers at all.
- Change pets' stats to balance spell lost a bit and make them unique choices. Not too much of course.
Already working on to add cooldown or increased mana costs on all skills.
Also going to rework:
- Remove Engineer's current Sword and Board effects. Add fumble chance and fumble recoveries. T1: Increase Shield Bash damage by +30% and T2: Increase Fire Shield damage by +30%.
- Shorten Outlander's Bane Breath DoT length to 1 second without losing power and increase it's cooldown to 1,3 seconds.
Finally decided to give mods a chance month ago and damn some are awesome! Love that Far East pack.
Hello Saber, and Welcome to the forums.
All the stuff you point out is totally doable and not too hard to do, the only one that I have doubts is the Fame points idea but just because I haven't really messed with skill point allocation. Certainly someone else can chime on that one.
Hi and thank you for reply. Glad to hear most of these are possible ideas in veteran's eyes. Time to start practicing more and guess I'll leave that one to last, or figure some alternative system.
Welcome to TorchModders,
@Saber! I remember being in your shoes a couple of years ago.
Most of your suggested changes
should be doable, but there are a couple of ideas that will not work due to hardcoded mechanics.
Lower player's spells from 4 to 1 and pet's from 4 to 0.
Unfortunately, this one will not work due to the hardcoded nature of the "LEARN SKILL" effect (which the spell system uses to function). Many skilled modders have tried to change the spell slot limits, and have all failed.
It
might be different in this case, since you are planning to
reduce the number of available spell slots (most prior efforts were to
add spell slots instead)—but I still sincerely doubt your goal is possible.
- Remove Skill points from Fame levels and change them into Fame Points.
- Fame points can only be spent on General Passives.
The relationship between skill investment and the vanilla "skill points" stat is also hardcoded. You literally cannot change the base rank of a skill without investing actual "skill points" in it.
There are workarounds once a skill is at least Level 1, but "boosting" passive skills in these ways has been shown to sometimes cause glitches and game performance problems (i.e. a major FPS hit with certain passives).
Thanks. I'll try to remove the amount and see how it will work out. Will let you know when it's done.
I wrote it quite bad for the skill point system. My plan is to keep skill points from level ups still. Fame levels would give fame point instead of skill point. This way max skill points would be lowered to 100 from 132 and players would get 33 Fame points instead to be used on passives. Let's say each passive has 6 upgrades so total of 5 could be maxed from xx. To compensate the skill point loss I'm reducing passive upgrades to 10 from 15 and add 2 tiers on them. Also been planning other ways to balance the game. If those are impossible to do, I'll probably change plans somehow.
Hi
@Saber welcome to torchmodders!
Being flexible about ur ideas is a good mindset for modding! But i do think what u want is doable. The hard one will be the "points for passives only". Can u share what kind of player experience ur after, that makes u want to do the passives that way?
Also have a look at
@doudley 's Skills Expansion mod; it might give you more ideas...
Finally feel free to use the tm discord for quick q&a type discussions (the link is right under the shoutbox in the righthand panel, on most forum pages).
Hi Phanjam here aswell. Yeah I joined there few days ago.

Will check the link. However I haven't played any game that has such system. MU Online goes to closest I believe. The idea came from playing a lot and havent seen many difficulty increasers for my taste. Everything is about to buff enemies, but I'm looking to improve Vanilla experience by nerfing the classes a bit. Or probably not pure nerfing, but making more build options viable. Nerfing the strongest skills and builds mostly.
Also by adding cooldowns will change the gameplay into auto attacking, kiting and comboing instead of "press and hold 1 to kill eveything in seconds."
General Passives and FEP+ mods made me want to start this project.
Sorry for double post but omg that's one fascinating mod! If my plans fail I'll definitely use it!
