Now that things a quiet down a bit and most of the features of our web services are working fine, I need some input and inspiration, to what we should have on the front page. That welcome message doesn't quite do it, sitting there all alone... :'( We need some more elements to show who we are, what we do, and what we're trying to achieve.
I'm thinking images (slide shows), Articles, "Mod of the Week" or "Project of the Week", links to other sites, news feed, social links, featured tutorials, what ever. Any ideas on what we should have there and how it should be presented?

I like the idea of a slideshow which features projects we are working on or have completed. For the moment, that might be a bit barren. However, if everyone's cool with it, we could use images showcasing mods that have been completed up to this point by our individual members.
I have no ideas for layout or presentation.

Hiyya!
Definitely agree with featuring the mods which are somehow connected to the site (as suggested by gytfunke, either being developed on the site or, for now, developed in the past by a current member). Hopefully this can be pulled dynamically from the live project list.
Would be nice of we could feature wiki info too, like "total articles" and "latest article". There's probably a dokuwiki script that'll build a page containing this info, which you could then pull from. I'll do some research into that.
The "recent posts" module for the forum (or the joomla equivalent) would be nice to feature on the front page too.
Lastly, basic site stats like "total members", "currently on-line members" and "latest member" would be nice to show.
I think this mix of info would give visitors a good snapshot of nature of the site and the level and quality of its activities :)

is there a way to modify the side panel here? make the columns drag and drop-able to reorganize the order?

Hi.
There is no way for users to re-arrange the order of the boxes on the right. Admins can do that, but that will re-arrange the layout globally for everyone. You can hide the sidebar though, if you like. there's a tiny minus (-) sign to the right over the Quick Search box, where you can show/hide the entire sidebar.
